Bonus chapter: Norwegian dialects

Norway has a wide range of dialects. Since there is no official spoken standard language as in many other countries, the dialects are used in all areas of life. Even television and radio are no exceptions. Many Norwegians are proud of their ability to know where someone comes from based on their dialect. This often makes the question "Where are you from?" unnecessary.

Here I will give examples of the major dialect regions in Norway. Roughly speaking, five groups can be distinguished, which can be subdivided into a large number of subgroups. Of those five, we will first take a closer look at two, Trøndersk and Bergensk. As a learner of Norwegian, it is important for you to understand the different dialects, as you will encounter them in all situations. Listen to the examples and get used to the wide variety of dialects.

You will hear chapter 14 and 26 read by speakers from Trøndelag and Bergen.
